Sara Schmidt, Aaron Ralls, and Brad King are friends and coworkers who love what they do and enjoy doing it together.  We specialize in the use of locally harvested, minimally processed, and all-natural materials that bring unique warmth, elegance and connectivity to our projects.  Earthbound strives to create comfortable and efficient spaces that showcase nature’s genius for design while providing the best in passive thermal and environmental health performance. We honor the ancient wisdom and inherent beauty of building in traditional ways using locally abundant natural materials.

We believe you can increase your quality of life in any space with natural building techniques. Our beautiful clay plasters add warmth and elegance, whether they’re on urban remodels, owner-built straw bale cottages or modern high-rise condominiums. A wood-fired earthen oven or roundwood timber-framed pergola can transform any outdoor area.  The opportunity to bring beauty and connection to nature into your spaces can lay dormant in the smallest of projects.  Contact us with your dreams, no matter their size, and we will do what we can to help realize their full potential.

We Believe in the Worker-Owned Model

We believe that building something beautiful should be good for everyone involved.  Sustainability isn’t just about building “green”; it applies to everything from the economics of local spending to our personal growth as craftspeople and human beings.  After several years of working together as independent contractors, we have joined forces to form a collective.   We each bring unique strengths, expertise, and resources to the team while sharing the risks and rewards of our efforts as equals.  We evaluate each project’s needs individually and assign responsibilities and resulting wages accordingly.  Well-defined roles are established before each project starts and remain static throughout to ensure efficient decision making and clear communication.  This is a well-structured process between friends who enjoy working together, and we have found it more effective and efficient than working independently.  The arrangement produces better results for our clients and ourselves by providing an efficient and supportive working environment, placing incentives on high quality work at a great value, and ensuring that the most appropriate crafts-person is at the helm of each task.
